First nothing moved, then when snow and ice were gone, Beech logs swashed like a big wave into the markets – this for a shorted description of the hardwood logging season 2010/2011 in Germany. Meanwhile, sawmills are supplied with the volumes they had ordered. At season's end, many state-owned forestry operations have marketed similar quantities as last year. Even though, in many places focus was more on the lucrative softwood logging.

Towards the end of the hardwood season 2010/2011, demand for Oak slightly decreased not only at tender sales, but also at free-hand sales. Log traders and sawmills were no longer willing to pay any price. Asia exporters and German parquet industry increasingly bought Oak logs from France. The ambitious guide prices, which <b>Hessen-Forst</b> but also the country Rhineland-Palatinate had started the season, were not generally accepted as a standard.

Germany's Beech log exports rose by 149% in March 2011 compared to the same month last year. For the first Quarter 2011, the increase was 79.7%. Accelerating deliveries to China (+101%), direct or indirect via Denmark (+838%), caused that strong increase. There is also strong growth in exports to India, Japan, Netherlands and Czech Republic.

In the first Quarter of 2011, Germany's Oak log exports amounted to 23,000 m³, up 18,2% from the first Quarter of the previous year. Export value increased by 22.3%.

In 2010, Germany's Beech log exports rose by 15.4% to 490,000 m³. Highest increases were registered in exports to China (+23.9%), Sweden (+231.5%), and - despite boycott - India (93.1%).

In 2010, Germany's Oak log exports increased by 5% to 90,250 m³. The 60% decline of China exports in December has implications for the entire year's balance sheet. Finally, China was the largest customer for German Oak also in 2010.

In January, Germany's Oak logs exports amounted to 6,700 m³, up 35.4% compared to the reference month of the previous year. Furthermore, January exports were higher than exports in December (4,100 m³). Unlike in December, January brought again deliveries to Sweden. Continuing high figures were noted in exports to Denmark.

In January, Germany's Beech log exports increased by 20% compared to the same month last year. Export value increased by 40%. With a calculated average price of € 102/m³ across all destinations, this means a rise of 16.7%.<br>
For the most important export countries, the following average prices can be calculated from the January figures: China € 109/m³ (ø I-XII/2010: € 106/m³), Austria € 69/m³ (66), Sweden € 69/m³ (64) and Japan € 177/m³ (176).

Thanks to strong shipments to Sweden and Denmark, Germany's beech log exports are ranging clearly above the previous year. Although a strong demand from Chinese buyers is reported at the beginning of the hardwood season 2010/2011, exports to the Far East were down in October compared to last year, caused by a reduced hardwood harvest in Germany.

In October Germany's Oak log exports were down 2.8% compared to the reference month last year. For the period of January to September, exports show an increase of 11.6%. The theoretical average price over all destinations was at € 149/m³ in October, well below the previous year. Reduction in deliveries of high quality oak to France became noticeable. For the most important export countries, the following average price can be calculated from the September statistics: China € 130 €/m³ (ø I-X/2010: € 129/m³), Indonesia € 85 €/m³ (ø I-X/2010: 139), Sweden € 76/m³ (ø I-X/2010: 84), France € 341/m³ (ø I-X/2010: 244) and Netherlands € 115/m³ (ø I-X/2010: 150).

In November, Germany's oak log exports were down 19.1% compared to the reference month last year. For the period from January to November export volume amounted to 86,141 m³, up 9% compared to the same period one year earlier. Theoretical average prices are still significantly lower than in 2009. In November average price was € 146/m³ (October 149) continuing the downward trend.

A sharp increase in Beech log exports to China, Denmark and especially to Sweden caused sinking average prices. Thanks to strong shipments to these countries, Germany's Beech log exports were up 21.3% from January to November compared to the same period last year. The export to China started running in November and amounted to 21.200 m³ well above the previous year and the October volume (14.500 m³).

Forestry offices in Hesse having a delivery quote of more than 40% of the volume agreed upon in fall may enjoy higher beech log prices. Beech log contracts with a large sawmill were modified at the turn of the year. New prices are for a quantity of 100,000 cubic meters.
