Only a few price adjustments have been reported, mostly prices remain firm and unchanged. Exporters report continued good demand from China and other major markets and expect the current market stability to be maintained through to the third quarter of the year

Central/West African producers report that all European markets are quiet and any purchases are only for replacement of stocks and tend to be for only the faster moving timbers. The weak demand in Europe has resulted in some price weakness for species which are most susceptible to even small shifts in demand.

Exports planation wood products increased in the first 10 months of this year. Between January and October 2016, pulp exports increased 11% year on year to 10.7 million tonnes. Paper exports reached 1.7 million tonnes in the same period, a 3.2% growth compared to 2015. In addition there was an over 60% rise in exports volumes of woodbased panels 831,000 cu.m.

Overall, producers report no significant change in the market situation as demand remains moderate. Prices of sapelli and sipo, as of mid-October, were weak but despite this there is still no interest from buyers in Europe or China

The slight weakness in prices for sipo and sapele was reigned in over the past two weeks and there is no news of further price movements either up or down. On all producer’s minds is what effect the turmoil after the UK referendum will have on exports

Log prices were unchanged throughout May in Central/West Africa and show no signs of movement even though there are reports of some modest increases in demand. Over the past few months analysts note a developing trend towards demand for better quality wood products with both buyers and consumers, through their own choice, being prepared to pay a fair price for a good product rather than pursuing the lowest price

There were no price movements for either logs or sawnwood over the past two weeks in Central/West Africa as international demand remains steady with no moves by either buyers or exporters to disrupt this long period of stability. Since growth in demand remains moderate Central/West African producers say they are not experiencing supply side problems

Producers in West and Central Africa report that international demand is generally dull but, for the small volumes traded, prices are still holding at late 2015 levels. Having said that, small volumes of okoume veneer logs have changed hands at prices previously seen for peeler logs. Producers also report some business in belli and okan log exports but volumes are small

At year end it is of interest to review the way business has developed over the past 12 months in Central/West Africa. In 2015 the big loser in terms of FOB price has been okoume where log prices have fallen around euro 140 per cu.m since the start of this year.
