In order to provide forest owners with improved liquidity, the German Federal Forest Ministry ruling coalition has developed a so-called sustainability bonus for the forest worth € 500 million. The sustainability premium is 100 € / ha and is aimed at private and municipal forest owners who own at least 1 hectare of forest area. The funding guidelines drawn up by Federal Minister Julia Klöckner will be published in the Federal Gazette on Friday.

The prerequisite for receiving the bonus is a sustainability certification of the forest area according to the PEFC or FSC programs. The certification can be submitted until September 30, 2021. The bonus will be paid out once certification is available. Natural and legal persons can submit applications until October 30, 2021. The application is made in an online form on the website www.bundeswaldpraemie.de . The payment of the bonus must be completed by the end of 2021, as the funds come from the Corona economic stimulus program.

Federal Minister Julia Klöckner: “With the sustainability bonus, we are giving forests and forestry a perspective in these difficult times. In the grand coalition we decided that money invested in forests is well spent. Because it is our forest managers and forest owners who shape the preservation and climate-adapted conversion of the forest. They do a lot for climate protection, but because of climate change they themselves have considerable economic difficulties and their very existence is threatened we'll help you with the bonus - based on clear sustainability criteria. "

The sustainability bonus is part of the Corona economic stimulus package “Forest & Wood” amounting to a total of € 700 million. The remaining € 200 million are earmarked for investments in modern forestry and wood management and to promote building with wood. As early as the beginning of November, a program worth € 50 million was started from these funds with which investments in IT hardware and software, machines, devices, systems and buildings that are used in sustainable forestry and mobile wood processing are promoted.
