German construction industry showed no significant corona effects in August

Preliminary data from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) certify that the German construction industry was somewhat insensitive to the pandemic in August 2020. Although sales fell by 3.4% compared to August 2019, this was still at a high level. Nevertheless, the “carpentry and timber engineering” branch grew by + 5.8% - consequently as one of the few.

From January to August 2020, however, sales in the construction industry rose by 3.6% compared to the same period of the previous year. The number of employees increased by 1.5% in the same period. In building construction, sales fell by 2.3% and in civil engineering by 6%.

In building construction, sales fell by 2.3% in August 2020 compared to August 2019 and in civil engineering by 6.0%. Among the branches of the economy with the highest turnover within the entire construction trade, only the trades “carpentry and timber engineering” with + 5.8% and “underground engineering and sewage plant construction” with +5.3% recorded increases in turnover. With -9.1%, the construction of roads and rail routes saw the greatest drop in sales compared to August 2019.
