Although during the previous years the demand for oak logs exceeded the supply in a noticeable and almost significant way, in the course of this spring the surplus in demand has decreased noticeably in Germany. This was particularly clear during this year's value appointments  for quality timber: starting from February the average revenue for every Fm decreased by 10 to 15% compared with the previous year .

Actually in many cases this trend was justified by a lower quality. However the decline in prices should not be attributed exclusively to lower wood quality but also to a lack of interest.

Currently most round wood processors seem to have enough stockpiles, but however they have manifested their interest in reducing some of the quantities acquired last year. So far no new agreements related to significant quantities have been announced. It is clear that neither the providers, nor the consumers have agreed upon future price lines. It is not yet clear in which direction will the future prices develop.

Exports in oak logs have declined sharply, in particular in China, the main customer, where exports fell by two thirds compared to the previous year.

Although exports to Sweden increased by six tenths, this has not compensated for decreases in exports to other regions. When considering the average price at border crossing in the first half of 2012 compared to the same period last year it should be noted that overall prices fell only slightly by 3.7%, respectively € 156 / Fm. However, the decline in sales to the two main consumers, China and Denmark, was strong, by 12.5% , respectively 22.9%.

In what concerns neighbouring France, it was noted that in spring, during the highest bid dates, about three tenths of the quantities on stock have not been sold or that bids have not been placed. Also, the number of bidders has decreased significantly. Also the quantities placed in the post auction sales have been rated lower by 15 to 20%. It can be assumed that quantitites that have not been sold in the Far East or whose sale has been reduced are now being pushed on the domestic market.
