The Association of the European Planing Industry (VEH) noted an increased demand for planed wood for indoor and outdoor use in March and April. Production was well utilized across Central Europe. The exit restrictions in various European countries due to the coronavirus pandemic therefore led to increased investments in the home and garden, from which the furniture industry could benefit.

Since the operation of the official construction sites was never interrupted in Germany, there was also a great demand for planed goods products. VEH members stated that the availability of free truck capacities is not causing any problems this year. “This is certainly due to the fact that other industries had completely stopped producing and so there was a lot of cargo space available. Usually we always had a bottleneck around Easter, ”explains the board member of VEH Torsten Herzel.

“Consistent production was occasionally not possible. We have definitely lost what will be difficult to catch up this year. Nevertheless, companies are confident that 2020 will be a good year for the sale of planed goods. In the outside area for terraces, facades and fences, in the inside area for wall and ceiling cladding and floors made of solid wood ”, says Norbert Salfinger from the Holzcenter Weiss and technical expert of VEH confidently.

Italy had also reported good demand until March and good sales figures are also expected after the shutdown.
